DESCRIPTION
The Scutum was carried by Roman soldiers from 100 A.D. onward. This Roman Scutum is constructed from Poplar wood; a brass shield boss and brass riveted edging are fitted to the shield; its reverse is backed with strips of wood and it is held with a horizontal wooden grip.
This shield is 1,2 cm thick and made of several layers of wood. It is covered with red dyed linen. The back is strengthened with narrow wooden slats. The shield can be carried with a grip behind the umbo. Its height is 107 cm, its width is 59 cm (including the curve).

It is common for this item to have patination on the brass shield rim and shield boss - it can be cleaned to a bright sheen with polishing paste and scuff pads.
